What People Come to Ed For
Most people who come to Ed have been dealing with something for a while. Back, neck and shoulder pain that hasn’t responded to other things. Headaches. Tension that sits in the body and won’t release. Sleep that doesn’t come easily. Digestive discomfort. The kind of stress that has stopped feeling like stress and started feeling physical.
Some come because they’ve tried most other things. Some come alongside physical therapy, massage, or care from their doctor. Some are simply curious.
Ed’s largest area of practice is pain and musculoskeletal work. He also works regularly with sports injuries, digestive complaints, and stress-related concerns.
What a Session Is Actually Like
If you’ve never had acupuncture, the needles are the part people worry about. They’re about the width of a human hair — nothing like the needles used for injections or blood draws. Most people feel a brief sensation as each one goes in, and then nothing. Many fall asleep.
Your first visit runs about 75 minutes (see cost above). Ed spends a good part of that talking with you about your history and what’s going on before any needles are involved, so the treatment is built around what you actually came in for rather than a set protocol. Follow-up visits are about 60 minutes.
You stay clothed or partly clothed depending on the areas being worked on, and loose comfortable clothing is easiest. You’ll rest for 20 to 30 minutes with the needles in place.
Ed’s Training
Ed received a Master of Acupuncture degree from the Northwest Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Seattle, Washington. Alongside classical Chinese medicine he has continued to study Japanese-style acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, Chinese and western herbs, and eastern and western nutrition.
He draws on all of it rather than working from a single protocol, and tailors each session to what a patient needs that day.
Acupuncture and Bodywork Under One Roof
Ed practises inside an established massage and bodywork practice. Patients who want to combine acupuncture with massage or structural work can see both at the same location, and the therapists talk to each other.
Common Questions
Do I need a referral?
No. New York State does not require a physician referral for acupuncture. You can book directly.
Does it hurt?
The needles are very fine. Most patients describe a dull ache or a feeling of heaviness at the point rather than anything sharp. Tell Ed if something is uncomfortable and he will adjust.
How often should I come?
Acupuncture tends to work cumulatively, and the people who get the most from it come in on a rhythm rather than only when something flares up. Ed will talk with you about what spacing makes sense.
Is Ed licensed?
Yes. Ed holds L.Ac. and M.Ac. credentials and is licensed by the New York State Education Department, with over 25 years in practice.
Do you take insurance?
Coverage varies by plan. Call us and we’ll tell you what we can, but check directly with your insurer about acupuncture benefits.
