Why do our Mother’s Day Gift Certificate look like they are a scene from West Side Story?

Why do our Mother’s Day Gift Certificate look like they are a scene from West Side Story?

Our 2026 cards are a continuation of the story cards we’ve been rolling out.

I know the image of two women talking somewhere in Brooklyn, in what looks like the 1920s, is a somewhat unusual gift certificate idea. The thought came to me one morning as I was leaving for work and saw the absolute mountain of laundry our four children had created for my wife to do that day, and likely every day after that.

It struck me that she is not the only one dealing with that kind of load. Our neighborhood is not unique, and neither is this moment in time. This kind of laundry, at this kind of overwhelming level, has been happening for a long time. It ties mothers together across time and space. It connects them.

The image is not for Mother’s Day, it’s for mothers.

These two women are having a conversation. It probably started with something simple like how much of a pain in the ass laundry is, but it has moved on to deeper and more personal things. What connects them, quite literally, are the laundry lines between them.

Mothering is hard work. I wanted to create a card that reflects that in a way that feels real, authentic, and a little bit fun. Something that maybe looks like it could have come out of West Side Story.

The image of the woman in the tree is inspired by my wife Chanel and is based on the reference below. I also made an alternative version in case the mother in your life looks different.

If this feels a little too far afield, we always have our classic letterpress certificates available as well.
