My daughter Ophelia was tracing her hands one day and I flashed on what a cool image that was to convey a massage. I started thinking other ways of using symbols and images to convey ideas and these certificates are the result.

I drew inspiration from the board game is my wife and I play in the evenings that often have intricate cards and designs. Saint Petersburg and Seven Wonders are both games we enjoy playing. I have always admire the art and thoughtfulness that went into the game design.

I also used tarot cards and symbology as a reference point for these designs. These are not mystical or religious massage and bodywork gift certificates, but I wanted them to convey a message the same way our letterpress gift certificates convey a feeling of inherent value.

Finally, I drew inspiration from my children’s stories and my made up fables that I tell them each night. I wanted these certificates to tell a little story, or if I really get it right to be the tip of the iceberg of a larger narrative. Ideally the same card can be read differently by different people.

The specialist certificate features a practitioner taming a bolt of lightning and transmitting it into the client. The certificate signifies the healing power of nature, and the practitioner being more of a conduit to something much more powerful.
